American actor and producer Tom Cruise is well-known for his parts in a number of blockbuster films. He was raised in a Catholic household and was given the name Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York. His mother was a special education teacher, and his father worked as an electrical engineer.

Growing up, Cruise attended a number of different schools, including an Ottawa, Canada, high school and a Franciscan seminary. He relocated to New York City to pursue an acting career after finishing high school. He appeared in his first film, “Endless Love,” in 1981, but it was his part in “Risky Business” in 1983 that catapulted him to fame.
